Session #1: Introduction to Challenging Conversations, February 20 2024
In this session Carla Peck, Sandra Lapointe and Joel Westheimer discussed the various ways in which teachers can establish frameworks within their classrooms so that students are engaged in respectful dialogue. As classroom teachers increasingly navigate through discussions that can include polarizing issues, disinformation and misinformation, the speakers provided strategies so that students can feel psychologically safe, and teachers can encourage a dialogue of diverse perspectives which are central to a Canadian democratic society.
Following each session, there is a break-out group where participants have an opportunity to share their insights, thoughts and questions about their own practice. At the end of the Institute, a compiled list of shared resources will be provided to participants.
